It is New Year's Eve 2010 and somebody has decided to celebrate the occasion in a most twisted fashion – by dressing as a nun and brutally dismembering an elderly female partygoer. In charge of investigating the grisly murder is Lieutenant Teniente Arribas (Roberto Álvarez), a balding, toothless and lonely detective. Arribas' investigations uncover a bizarre connection to several other unsolved murders and lead him to a renegade physician, Doctor Werner (Héctor Alterio), who recounts the story of the famous but reclusive Lola Otero, once hailed as the most beautiful woman in the world. Unknown to the world at large, however, Lola's's beauty is solely the result of Werner's groundbreaking work in ‘morphogenetics'. Rejected at birth by her parents because of her gross disfigurement and reviled and abused by all who gazed upon her ‘elephant woman'-like appearance, Lola was raised by nuns, followers of Mother Theresa of Calcutta. It was only at the age of 24, thanks to Werner's revolutionary therapy, that she was finally able to externalize her internal beauty. As Lieutenant Arribas seeks to find a link between Lola and the serial killings of a series of Spanish beauty queens, he finds his investigation hampered by the fact that he is beginning to fall in love with his prime suspect in the case.
