Ayé, fini ! mon premier jeu console depuis facile 4 ans.

Legend of Lobo, Wolf King of Currumpaw, New Mexico

Aug 9, 2010 Thomas Wyatt

For a period in the 1890s, a large male wolf called "Lobo" and his pack roamed Currumpaw valley in New Mexico, preying upon cattle, and distressing cowboys and ranchers. Naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton, who despised wolves, and had hunted them in Manitoba where he grew up, came down to capitalize on the $1000 bounty offered for a killed Lobo. But with time, his view of these animals changed. Below is the history of the events of Lobo's hunting and capture, according to the man who finally caught the legendary wolf.

Legend of the Wolf Lobo, King of Currumpaw

Lobo was notorious among cowboys and ranchers. His pack was, at its height, thought to be responsible for the killing of one cow per day (as much of the wolf's naturally prey, including bison, extirpated from New Mexico, had been pushed out by settlers), but the wolves led by Lobo were seldom seen, and could not be successfully trapped or hunted.

Lobo's legend grew, and eventually, rewards were offered for his trapping or killing. Compensation for his removal reached $1000, which attracted Ernest Thompson Seton, an English naturalist who had grown up in Canada. Even as he began to hunt the wolf and its pack, he took time to watch other animals, such as pronghorn and elk, which he sketched and wrote about. Initially, Seton felt that wolves were simply vermin, which would kill young cattle without cause, but his opinion of these wild canines would later be impacted by a new sentiment.

Lobo, Wolf King of Currumpaw Avoids Capture

Judging by his prints, Seton estimated Lobo's weight to be around 150 lbs. The naturalist began tracking the wolf, following his tracks, and riding about visually searching for him. The wolf king, however, eluded his pursuer. Then, Seton tried poisoning the King of Currumpaw. He set baits, in the forms of poisoned chunks of meat about, but he soon began to notice a pattern of humiliating results: Lobo would inspect the baits, but never eat them. In fact, at one point, Seton recounted Lobo's carrying three poisoned chunks of meat to a fourth chunk, making a pile of four poisoned baits, none of which had been actually sampled.

Seton then resorted to placing traps. They were inconspicuously set along Lobo's paths of travel, and properly deodorized of human scent. The wolf, however, would not settle for simply avoiding the traps, which purported to catch the legs of wolves, which would then be easily track-able (presuming that the bulky traps did not catch on rocks or cacti, immobilizing the trapped wolf further). Instead, he disarmed the traps.

Capture of the Wolf Lobo

Seton was humiliated over and over by the wild canine. Lobo did not come within shooting range, he passed up poisoned meats, and he sprung traps to disable them, without catching himself. However, one day, Seton caught a big break.

The naturalist was now devoting much of his time to hunting Lobo, to no avail. Then, he noticed Lobo's tracks, but they were not the only prints he found: in front of Lobo's were smaller prints, leading him about wherever he went. He was following another wolf.

Her name was Blanca, according to local ranchers and cowboys, named so because of her white coat. Lobo was in love, and he followed his partner. Seton, hoping that there was an emotional attachment between the pair, decided to target Blanca. He set separate traps near pieces of cow. Lobo went to disarm one, but Blanca got caught in the other. Seton recounted that he shot Blanca, and brought her body back to his cabin. That night, he could hear Lobo howling melancholically from the hills, and his voice was devoid of the triumphant note that it usually carried. Seton also claimed that the King of Currumpaw visited his cabin that night, looking for Blanca.

Seton then set traps around, and dragged Blanca's body around the area, hoping that Lobo would be clumsy in looking for his partner, and would follow her scent wherever it led him. He was and did; Lobo was found by Seton, caught in four traps, with one on each leg. The naturalist had recently been developing an admiration for the wolf king, and he could not bring himself to kill him. He returned to his cabin with the wolf, who simply stared toward the mountains, seemingly unaware of anything else. Not long after he was brought back to the cabin, Lobo died.

Seton began to feel remorseful. He started to admire wolves, which he had once hunted actively in Manitoba, before coming down to New Mexico to hunt the famed Lobo. He began to respect the wild dogs which he had despised, and wrote a story, "Lobo the King of Currumpaw," which was featured in his book, Wild Animals I Have Known. Seton never killed another wolf.

GAME OF THE YEAR!
