Man of Steel - Superman by Zack Snyder, 2012

Zack Snyder's Man of Steel has found its General Zod

After a decent amount of speculation, the Sucker Punch director has settled on the villain for Warner Brothers' Superman reboot: that great Kryptonian refugee, General Zod. As for the actor who'll play him ... well, that's something of a surprise.

Snyder has chosen Michael Shannon, the Oscar-nominated character actor who's been in Revolutionary Road, Boardwalk Empire and—I'm sure it pains him to be reminded—Jonah Hex, to play Zod, the charismatic Kryptonian played by Terence Stamp in Superman II.

Given the relatively high wattage of the balance of Man of Steel's supporting cast—Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Pa and Ma Kent—Shannon's casting feels a little out of left field, but interesting, to say the least.

No word on whether Zod will be accompanied by his fellow Phantom Zone escapees, Ursa and Non, nor if the inclusion of Zod automatically eliminates the possibility of Lex Luthor making an appearance.

Here's the full press release:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder's new Superman film, titled Man of Steel.

Snyder stated, "Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."

As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series Boardwalk Empire, from executive producer Martin Scorsese. He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics', Take Shelter, from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Man of Steel will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Oh, and it's officially Man of Steel ... no "Superman" to be seen in the title. Interesting.

With just over two months to go before cameras start rolling, not one but two writers have been brought in to rewrite the script for the Superman reboot Man of Steel.

According to Moviehole, a source close to the production says that screenwriter David Goyer, who wrote the script for director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan, is too busy working on the new version of Godzilla to do some additional work on Man of Steel.

So first it was handed off to Nolan's brother Jonathan, who co-wrote The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises with his big brother. But now it's been passed along to Kurt Johnstad, who is apparently Snyder's go-to guy for script help. Johnstad worked on 300 and its upcoming sequel, 300: Battle of Artemisia.

What does all this mean? Well, additional work on a movie script is nothing new, and it's not unusual for a different scribe to get the job if the original screenwriter has moved to something else. Rumor has it that the third act of Man of Steel has some problems, but it's unknown whether that is all that needs to be changed.

It may not even set off any alarm bells that the script is still in the shop at this stage, but if the Sept. 21 production start date draws closer and the script is still not finished, then you might see some worried faces around Warner Bros. Pictures. Movies that have started filming without a complete screenplay include Spider-Man 3 and Iron Man 2 ... not exactly examples that inspire confidence.

And remember, the studio must get this movie into production and out by December 2012, because soon after that Superman is likely to get snarled in a legal rights battle than even he might not be able to win.

Does this news concern you? Can you imagine starting to make a gigantic superhero film and not having the script nailed down?

Superman
