As well as setting up the Factory Records label and the Hacienda Club, he was also a reporter and presenter on TV and radio in the Manchester area.

And his life was depicted in the film 24 Hour Party People.

Friends and colleagues, music fans and Mancunians spoke of a man who had "total belief" in himself and "made history, not money".

Tributes also came in from music fans and Mancunians on the Manchester Confidential entertainment website.

One user called Benford said: "A legend, pure and simple. I might not always have agreed with what he had to say, but at least he had his own opinions and they were always worth listening to. RIP Anthony H."

Others said Wilson had changed Britain - its nightlife, culture and music - and put his beloved Manchester on the map.

Wilson died after suffering a heart attack while receiving treatment for kidney cancer.

He was surrounded by family when he passed away.

A spokesman for Christie Hospital in Manchester said yesterday: "Tony Wilson died peacefully at 6.05pm this evening with his family by his bedside.

"Tony was a very great supporter of the Christie and this is extremely sad news.

"We would like to extend our sympathy to Tony's family."

Wilson's family are too upset to speak.
