The Shockproof Film Festival (Festival otrlého diváka) returns to Kino Aero on Tuesday, February 19th, offering up another batch of movies focussed on sex, violence and deeply inappropriate behavior.

An absurd offspring of the mandatory friendship between communist countries - Czechoslovakia and Kazakhstan (yes, the home of Borat). But instead of a timid socialistic entertainment the regime got a highly subversive phantasmagoric farce, comparable with Monty Python’s „Life of Brian“.

The first gore-film ever! A true classic! As Mr. Lewis himself have put it: „It was the first picture of its type. I’ve often compared it with a Walt Whitman poem – it’s no good but it’s the first of its type.“

The Ultimate Psychedelic Spaghetti Western. The first of so-called "midnight movies". Jodorowsky had a theory that film can effect the human mind in the same way as LSD and El Topo was to be his proof. John Lennon was impressed and backed its distribution.

Get ready for the Violence of the Lambs! An experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into blood-thirsty killers. The first feature film of New Zealand director Jonathan King is often beeing compared with the early works of fellow countryman Peter Jackson, but it firmly stands on its own.

Pink films (pinku eiga) are a type of Japanese soft-core pornographic theatrical films, that first appeared in the early 1960s. Often more socially-engaged and aesthetically well-crafted than simple pornography. The double feature consists of the following two films:

The film presents a reversed view at gender roles in erotic movies. This time the men are the object. But don’t expect any radical feminist aspirations, this is a pinku film full of surprises and playful irony.

 

THE GLAMOROUS LIFE OF SACHIKO HANAI

Japanese with English subtitles, 91 minut, 35 mm

Every intellectual’s wet dream. A simple-minded prostitute is accidentally shot in the forehead and the bullet stuck in her cerebral cortex makes her a genius. Much of the fun derives from the incongruous juxtaposition of raw sexuality with intellectual pretentiousness.

Made for only 23 000 dollars Deep Throat has grossed over 5 million just in the first year after its release. The censors have passed this heterosexual hard-core movie because going to porn theatres was considered "chic" in America at the time.

BRIDE OF THE MONSTER

Ed Wood’s more traditional horror movie. A tribute to classical Universal horrors of the 1930s. From the mind of a mad scientist comes a weird world of terror. It’s a world you can’t imagine. Starring Bela Lugosi and Tor Johnson.

An example of the flourishing African film industry, this particular movie deals with black magic and witchcraft. Beelzebub the Great presides over a curious black mass. Lecherous old bag Lady Destroyer tortures her son and steals the womb of her daughter. Has to be seen to be believed. Teco Benson is considered to be one of the more able directors, but African horrors have their specifics. Usually shot and finished in six days and distributed on VCD (video-cd), their sound and image quality is quite appalling, the special effects are crude, dialogue incongruous, yet they are extremely popular and commercially successful. One of the reason is their courage in breaking the still existing taboos in African cinema: crime, drugs, prostitution, witchcraft, political corruption, unmarital sex and even religion.

 

 

Late Bloomer

Japan, 2004, directed by Gô Shibata

Japanese with English and Czech subtitles, 83 min, 35 mm

 

Films about handicapped people are generally idealistic and naively optimistic. Not in this case. The wheelchair bound protagonist is not the classical ethical superman full of hope and determination, but a common man (played not by some household name, but by a handicapped actor) with natural needs and desires, full of anger and pain that lead him to murder. The unsettling quality of the story is punctuated by its agressive visual style, reminiscent of the works of Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo, A Snake of June, Vital). A truly radical film that stands outside the trash genre structures.

A man and a woman wake up together with two other people tied up in an empty swinery. Here they are about to become unwilling protagonists of a “snuff film” starring a devious sadistic maniac, hiding his face under a pig’s head. This shocking Korean film incorporates two major tendencies of contemporary western horror production – realism of the likes of The Blair Witch Project and the aesthetics of the so-called “torture porn” films. It is an ultimate test of viewers endurance.

 

The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel)

Unbelievable! Until you see it with your own eyes! German genre routinist Harald Reinl carved his place in history by directing a series of films about Winnetou and his white brother Old Shatterhand. This was his attempt to copy the success of Hammer gothic horrors. The main attraction of this hillariously naive picture is its “stellar” cast. Alongside Lex Barker and Karin Dor (Old Shatterhand and Ribanna) the film can boast the presence of the icon of British horrors – His Demonic Highness Christopher Lee himself.

Je peux vous dire que le public venu s'éclater est passé d'un extrême à l'autre : ça se gaussait bien en buvant binouze sur binouze devant El Santo, pour finir sur un silence de mort général. Ils sont complètement fous d'avoir ouvert le festival avec le film de Laugier (sur lequel je reviendrai je pense plus tard)
