Adrien Brody, Emmanuelle Seigner and Elsa Pataky have signed on to star in "Giallo," the latest thriller from Italian horrormeister Dario Argento.

 

"Giallo" revolves around an American flight attendant who teams with an Italian investigator to search for her missing sister who has been abducted by a serial killer known only as Yellow.

 

The term "giallo" means "yellow" in Italian and also refers to the Italian pulp, horror and erotic genre of film and literature. Argento has built his name with movies that combine horror and eroticism such as 1977's "Suspiria" and "The Mother of Tears," which The Weinstein Co./Myriad Pictures will release stateside June 6.

 

"Giallo" might mark the first time an actor of Brody's caliber has starred in an Argento film.

 

The film, from a screenplay by Jim Agnew and Sean Keller, will be produced by Rafael Primorac and Richard Rionda Del Castro.

 

Production is set to start May 12 in Torino, Italy, with postproduction work done in Los Angeles.

Je sais pas si c'est étalonné ou pas et je sais que c'est ridicule de juger sur une vidéo Youtube mais putain que c'est moche. Etant donné la photo "mauvais téléfilm allemand" de ses derniers films je parierais pas sur un truc mieux en salles

Une review sur Twitchfilm.... le reviewer y a vu une sorte d'auto-parodie absolument hilarante, allant même jusqu'à déclaré que Giallo est le film le plus drôle réalisé depuis des lustres!! Rien que ça!

Il précise quand même qu'il n'est pas certain que c'est là la volonté de sieur Dario, mais qu'il l'espère malgré tout...

Dario Argento’s latest has been one of the biggest surprises of the festival. Surprising in that it’s absolutely hilarious, and by that I don’t mean a little bit funny, I mean as funny a film I’ve seen at the cinema in ages, comedies included. Giallo is Argento’s homage to the Italian thrillers of the 70s that so informed his early work and made his name. The film centres on Inspector Enzo Avolfi’s (Adrien Brody) hunt for an aerosol sniffing, rubber faced serial killer known simply as yellow, or in a classic line “you yellow fuck”, who targets beautiful young girls to torture and ‘make ugly’ before finally dispatching them. Tailing Brody’s renegade inspector (his “methods aren’t exactly by the book”) is the sister of a missing fashion model (Emmanuelle Seigner). The duo bumble around an Italian city populated by American-speaking Italians, making clunky revelations until the inevitable climactic chase.

 

Taking every staple of serial killer thrillers and hard-boiled detective films, Argento constructs the most hackneyed and clichéd film possible, filling his cast’s mouths with some of the most hilariously awful, clunky and absurd dialogue imaginable. Brody and Seigner play the entire thing 100% straight and you imagine there must be one hell of an out-takes reel somewhere. From Brody’s perpetual smoking and eternal frown to Seigner’s crazed histrionics there’s a sly gag going on here.

 

The problem, if there is one, is that so much of Argento’s recent work has been genuinely terrible, that there’s a nagging doubt as to how much of a parody he intended this to be. With the line between homage and parody blurry at the best of times, Giallo has understandably met with some mixed responses. Taken as simply an Argento horror film, and you’ll quite rightly dismiss it as another gross misfire and reason to give up on the old fella forever. Take it as an incredibly sly parody (the heavily made-up killer is credited as Byron Deidra, an anagram of Adrien Brody…) and you’ll most likely find much to enjoy. Whereas previous Argento failures have been just plain bad in terms of plot, dialogue or character, Giallo goes beyond this to meticulously pick up on the overused conventions of the genre and its typical script deficiencies. Affectionately highlighting the absurdities of these genre pieces, it’s very much (I hope) a self-referential in-joke.

 

Some of the famous Argento touches are still there, particularly in the trademark close-ups of knives bloodily piercing (latex) flesh and the eerie childhood flashbacks, but of course taken on parodic terms these become comical rather than scary or horrific. What it does make you sadly wonder is whether we’ll ever see the director do a proper horror film again, but arguably that possibility was scuppered sometime in the late 80s. Either way I can thoroughly recommend this as one of the most purely entertaining films of recent years

C'est vachement moins drôle que Mother of Tears. Adrien Brody est quand même crédité à la production. Il a l'air désolé d'un bout à l'autre. On dirait qu'Argento n'a pas vu un film depuis 25 ans. M'enfin ça aurait pu être bien pire. J'aurais préféré.

Ce qui avaient réussi à aimer the card player et aimez vous Hitchcock?, dernières cendres de Dario, dont je fais partie, vont faire la gueule!

 

Cela doit être le film le plus chiant d'Argento depuis son fantôme de l'opéra.

 

Pour visualiser la chose,il faut imaginer un mix improbable entre un épisode de Derrick et un torture porn sans gore et sans cul.

 

Chaque plan est interminable et inutile, le scénario consternant, la mise en scène absente, le maquillage du tueur aurait fait fureur il y a vingt ans dans la rubrique bricolage de Mad et le pire est atteint par le jeu d'Adrien Brody qui concurrence celui du flic de l'Humanité de Dumont...

Je pensais pas qu'un jour je réévaluerais à la hausse "Card player" ou "Aimez vous Hitchcock ?" mais c'est le cas tellement ce "Giallo" arrive à descendre 10 crans en dessous ! C'est proprement stupéfiant de nullité d'un bout à l'autre, à tous points de vue ! Je sais même pas par où commencer tellement la vision de ce truc a été un calvaire absolu. Entre un scénar nul à chier, une mise en scène aux abonnés absents, un cast où tout le monde semble se faire chier comme pas possible, une photo laide à pleurer.... Rien à sauver, même pas un plan sympa, une idée égarée ou un bout de musique écoutable... Le film semble avoir 30 ans, le tueur est sans doute un des plus ridicules de l'histoire du cinéma, c'est incroyablement ennuyeux, laborieux, même pas drôle au 40e degré comme peut l'être un "Mother of tears", juste triste à pleurer... Vraiment un calvaire, déprimant, RIP Dario...

Une pensée émue pour Vincent Gallo qui devait jouer le rôle principal (récupéré par Brody) avant de tout laisser choir afin de filer sur le plateau du "Tetro" du Coppola.

Un (télé ?)film foireux avec une photo dégueulasse, une mise en scène pourrie, un scénario bidon, et des acteurs à la ramasse (putain, Brody se paie le luxe d’être doublement mauvais).

 

Vraiment vilain.

 

Voilà, on va pas passer trois heures à tirer sur l’ambulance.

 

Dans certains des derniers travaux du père Dario, on avait encore parfois une petite étincelle de génie, une micro-résurgence d’un passé glorieux.

 

Avec Giallo, c’est fini.
